Course Descriptions: This course covers principles of microbiology with emphasis on microorganisms and human disease. Topics include an overview of microbiology and aspects of medical microbiology, identification and control of pathogens, disease transmission, host resistance, and immunity. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate knowledge of microorganisms and the disease process as well as aseptic and sterile techniques.

Course Objectives:

  1. The student will possess a working knowledge about the nature, activities and structure of medically significant microorganisms.
  2. The student will understand the means by which microorganisms and viruses invade host tissue and establish themselves.
  3. The student will know the chemical and physical effects of infectious disease.
  4. The student can demonstrate laboratory techniques used to isolate and test pure cultures.
